La propagación de cariñena, conocida en Italia con el nombre de carignano, refleja el estrecho vínculo que une a los países vitivinícolas de la cuenca mediterránea: la encontramos en España con el nombre de cariñena, carignan en Francia, y en Italia está especialmente arraigada en Cerdeña y la zona del Sulcis. En el Sulcis, concretamente, la textura predominantemente arenosa de los suelos permitió a los viñedos sobrevivir al ataque de la filoxera; prueba de ello es que la cooperativa Santadi elabora su Santadi Carignano del Sulcis Reserva Rocca Rubia íntegramente con uvas de viñedos de pie franco (sin injertar). Es fascinante que de unos suelos tan pobres como los del Sulcis pueda nacer un vino de aroma tan sutil, tan lleno y acogedor. Rocca Rubia presenta un sólido color granate y en nariz ofrece un abanico de fragancias de frutas sobre un ligero fondo de especias y maderas nobles. En boca confirma esta sutileza: aterciopelado pero con taninos firmes, fresco, sabroso y muy agradable. Un vino con cuerpo, que consigue equilibrar su notable graduación alcohólica con una buena ejecución.
