The production region of A.O.C. Santenay is located in La región de Sancerre, en la parte oriental del valle del Loira, al sureste de Orleans. Casi toda la denominación se encuentra en la orilla izquierda del Loira, frente a Pouilly-Fumé. Está bien considerado y principalmente asociado con Sauvignon blanc. La ciudad se encuentra en un afloramiento de la tiza que corre desde los acantilados blancos de Dover hasta Champagne y Chablis.
