Este vino debe su nombre a la hija mayor de Angelo y Lucia Gaja, GAIA, y la abuela de Angelo, Clotilde REY. Gaia & Rey se produce a partir de dos viñas en las áreas de Barbaresco y Barolo: una de las viñas fue plantada en Treiso en 1979 y la otra en Serralunga d’Alba, en 1989. Esta última viña aporta más acidez y estructura al vino. Las 3,6 ha. están consagradas a la noble variedad blanca Chardonnay. Los suelos pobres en potasio y nitrógeno, contribuyen a limitar el vigor de las cepas. Utilizando una mayor densidad de plantación (5.500 pies por hectárea) se ha conseguido, a la vez, una menor producción de las cepas, reduciendo los rendimientos a 30 hl/ha.
