El Finca Monasterio es, según la propia bodega, la máxima expresión del Rioja mediterráneo. En su elaboración se emplean uvas vendimiadas a mano, básicamente de la variedad tempranillo combinadas con pequeños porcentajes de otros varietales. Toda la fruta procede del viñedo próximo al monasterio benedictino que fue plantado en 1985 en la localidad de Mendavia. En la estricta mesa de selección se descarta alrededor de un 20% de la uva; sólo las mejores bayas fueron despalilladas e iniciaron la fermentación, periodo durante el cual se sucedieron los frecuentes remontados y los controles diarios de los mostos a través de la cata. Tras una larga maceración que se prolongó más allá de la propia fermentación, se obtuvieron una excelente extracción de color y taninos que dibujaban ya el perfil de un vino moderno con un gran porvenir. Su crianza tuvo lugar durante 18 meses en barricas nuevas de roble francés y posteriormente se prolongó durante 6 meses en "foudres" de 10.000 litros de la misma madera. Se embotelló sin ser sometido a filtrado o estabilizado alguno. A la vista viste intenso y oscuro color picota, coronado de un ribete que se resiste a perder los tonos violáceos. En nariz dominan los aromas nítidos a fruta negra (moras y ciruelas) en mermelada y a maderas balsámicas con recuerdos a infusiones y té, coco, notas lácticas, cacao y especias como el clavo. En boca cuenta con una gran estructura y se muestra sabroso, equilibrado y elegante. Su tacto es jugoso y está recubierto de equilibrados taninos, con un trasfondo ahumado, casi de turba, muy penetrante. Su final es redondo y torrefacto, e invita a seguir bebiendo. Finca Monasterio es, sin duda, una moderna versión de la Rioja muy bien elaborada, que resulta irresistible y enormemente placentera. Para la crianza sólo se emplean barricas nuevas, con alto aporte tánico.

Por la diversidad orográfica y climática se distinguen tres subzonas de producción: Rioja Alta (76 términos municipales en la comunidad autónoma de La Rioja y 1, Miranda de Ebro, en la provincia de Burgos, Castilla y León), Rioja Baja (42 términos municipales en la comunidad autónoma de La Rioja y 8 en Navarra) y Rioja Alavesa (15 términos municipales en la provincia de Álava, País Vasco).
