Una selección de racimos de la tercera vendimia de los mejores y menos productivos viñedos de la bodega (edad media: 46 años) constituye la base de este vino tan especial. Fermentación maloláctica en barricas de un año. Envejecido durante 18 meses en barricas nuevas de roble francés y, posteriormente, durante 20 meses en botella.

The production region of D.O.Ca. Rioja is located in Las regiones de las comunidades autónomas de La Rioja y el País Vasco mayoritariamente, y en menor medida de Navarra y Castilla y León​. Por la diversidad orográfica y climática se distinguen tres subzonas de producción: Rioja Alta (76 términos municipales en la comunidad autónoma de La Rioja y 1, Miranda de Ebro, en la provincia de Burgos, Castilla y León), Rioja Baja (42 términos municipales en la comunidad autónoma de La Rioja y 8 en Navarra) y Rioja Alavesa (15 términos municipales en la provincia de Álava, País Vasco).
